Champions receive trophies - Tentative
2010 schedule announced
By Jim DeFord
PENDLETON, Oregon (October 25, 2009) — The 2009 USSBA
Racing Series champions have been officially crowned. Amanda Webb created
beautiful one-of-a-kind trophies for the teams to place in their trophy
cases. The dinner at the Pendleton Red Lion was absolutely delicious.
Results of the 2009 Motel Furniture Racing Association (MFRA)
luggage cart and chair races are under review. Protests have been filed and
fines may be issued. Injuries were minor and all furniture was returned
mostly intact.
The tentative 2010 schedule has been posted. Dan Morrison
announced that there is a pivotal meeting on or about November 3 that could
decide the fate of the proposed Port Angeles track.
The Army Corp of Engineers has presented some interesting
hurdles—like any government agency can—and everyone has their fingers
crossed that these issues will be resolved at that meeting
Revival of the track in Marsing, Idaho was also discussed as
there apparently are no races scheduled to run there by the NJSA in 2010.
There are quite a few hurdles to be resolved there before a race in Marsing
could be sanctioned by the USSBA.
Stay tuned to the USSBA website for further information on
both tracks. You will notice several open dates that could be filled by
races at both Port Angeles and Marsing.
Links for the photos from the weekend will be provided on the
forum.

All Jacked Up features USSBA sprint boats

By Jim DeFord

Howell's new show featuring the USSBA sprint boats premiered Saturday with
replays slated for Wednesday, Friday and Sunday on CMT.
You can also view the show on the Internet by

It is a great segment, is the lead-in to the half-hour show and really
represents the sport of Sprint Boat Racing in an excellent light and format.
Thanks to Tommy and the entire All Jacked Up crew for their work at Albany.

Marathon boat racer killed at Grants Pass
By Jim DeFord and Kyle Patrick
Photos by Mark Sharley
GRANTS PASS, Oregon (October 13, 2009) — Jeff
Bradley
was killed on Friday, October 9th, when attempting to run his marathon boat
through the Savage Rapids area on the Rogue River where a dam was recently
breached. Friday was the first day the rapids were opened after the dam had
been removed. The dam was built in 1921.
Jeff, his son and two others had successfully run through the
area six times, took a half-hour break and then were set to run it again.
It is suspected that during those thirty minutes the silt had
shifted causing a boulder to move. People allegedly had witnessed 4-foot
boulders being pushed by the waters in the days after the dam was removed.
Bradley's 12-year-old son and the two others suffered minor
injuries.
Eyewitness accounts say that Bradley's son and the two others
were thrown from the boat. The boat flipped twice over with Jeff still in
the boat. Jeff did stand up, apparently checking on the other passengers and
then collapsed. He was pulled from the Rogue River 300 yards downstream from
the accident. Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessfully performed on-shore.
This
death touches especially close to home, not only because Jeff is a fellow
racer, but that the USSBA sprint boats have been appearing at Grants Pass
for several years and many of our race family knew Jeff and had met him and
his family. This loss has devastated the Marathon boat racing community.
For one of our racers, Kyle Patrick, it cannot get any
closer. In April 2001, on the Salmon River in Riggins Idaho, Kyle was
navigator for Bruce Mills. Their boat crashed at Twin Bridges and Bruce was
killed instantly. Kyle nearly lost his life as he struggled under water for
over one minute to free himself of his harness and the boat hull in the fast
moving water.
A memorial will be held at Griffith Park tomorrow in Grants
Pass. Jeff's family and friends plan on spreading his ashes on the water at
every place he raced.
God speed Jeff. RIP. Please keep Jeff's family and friends in
your prayers as they grieve through this tragedy.

Jacked Up is a CMT

boats from 300 – 1000HP and more.
Bleacher seating is

ULHRA fans falling in love with Sprint
Boats!
Second exhibition event another resounding
success
By Jim DeFord
CHAMBERLAIN-OACOMA, South Dakota (July 14, 2009) —
River City Racin' and the local community of Chamberlain and Oacoma welcomed
the USSBA Sprint Boat teams with open arms. The throng of fans put the
exclamation mark on that with their resounding cheers as the boats splashed
the fans time and again.
The USSBA thanks the ULHRA, River City Racin' and all their
sponsors and promoters for such a great event. The Pepsi Racing PowerCup
Challenge is by far the largest event in the area and the USSBA is proud to
have been a part and are looking forward to returning in the future.
The mayors of both Chamberlain and Oacoma, in addition to
several sponsors, were given rides in several of the Sprint Boats. Having
ridden in one myself, I know this is an experience they will never forget!

ending race still on!
By Jim DeFord
PORT ANGELES, Washington (July 20, 2009) — It is so,
so, so difficult to get permits for any new facilities these days. Any kind
of racing facility raises the eyebrows of multiple government entities. The
regulations and red tape are endless. Dan Morrison and his crew have been
working extremely hard to make this race happen, but there is just simply
not enough time left.
However, they are still hopeful that everything will fall
into place for the National Finals in September. More news and details will
be available at the driver's meeting Saturday morning.

Live broadcast an International success!
6,000 unique
viewers see first live Internet broadcast
By Jim DeFord
SAINT JOHN, Washington (June 21, 2009) — Between the
fans in the stands and the Internet media viewers, we had an estimated
11,000 watch the first race of the USSBA Racing Series! There were people
logged on from all over the globe.
Congrats to our video guru, Paul White, his wife and crew,
who struggled through the weekend with a tried and true dedicated cell
connected that died race morning. A generator that died one hour into the
broadcast and several other glitches.
Just mere hurdles in the techno-world. At the end of the day,
this is a huge success. Thanks for all of you who watched the first
broadcast. I just spoke with Paul on the phone and the Albany race will rock
the planet. Stay tuned to USSBA-LIVE!
The real kicker here is when Cory Johnson, of British
Columbia, Canada, called his Mom to tell her the good news that he had won
his first race.
Her answer? "I know! I just watched
you win the race on the Internet!"
In addition to the video, we have a huge gallery of still
photos to be placed online in the next couple of days. We have 3,500 photos
to review. Paul White will also be editing some highlight reels to come in
the near future out of three action packed DVD's he recorded on Saturday.
For the latest and greatest in Sprint Boat Racing, this is
the place to be!

A beautiful race
weekend on tap for Webb's Slough
Finally,
it's time to race!
By Jim DeFord
SAINT JOHN, Washington (June 12, 2009) — I just got off
the phone with the folks working feverishly at Webb's Slough as they make
final preparations for next weekend's opening race to the 2009 USSBA Racing
Series.
The water is perfect, the grass is green and the town of St.
John is ready for an estimated 4,000 race-hungry fans to invade their quiet,
little community.
The current, extended weather forecast says it will be partly
sunny and 76°. The locals are saying low 80's. I'll take either.
Over the off season, several racing teams were being formed,
following in the steps of Wicked Racing. We now have Wicked Racing, TNT
Racing, Psycho Racing, Diamond Racing, Slingshot Racing and U4IC Racing
teams. Some are single boat teams, some have as many as three boats.
The team concept saves money (we won't discuss the economy)
and provides a wealth of information to share for boat setups and parts
sharing.
There are are some rookies coming in. Veteran drivers coming
back. Several new hulls, some new engines and rebuilt engines and a few
teams driving entirely new boats, hull, pump, engine and all!
Do not miss this season!
We will also be experimenting next weekend with the first
attempt at a live, Internet broadcast event. More details as we get closer
to the weekend.

Shotgun Sprint hulls
hard to beat!
John "Dutch"
Decoy's long experience in sprinting takes the sport to a new level
PORT McNEILL, British Columbia (December 18, 2008) —
John "Dutch" DeRooy has been involved in the world of
sprint
boat racing, or Jet Sprinting, as it's known down under, since its birth in
1988. You are not going to find anyone on this side of the Pacific with more
experience than John.
The Shotgun hull has won championships in the U.S., Australia
and New Zealand since it first touched water 16 years ago.

The newest Shotgun hull is the best of the best refined to be
even better. Every boat comes off a custom, high-tech jig that guarantees no
buckles, twists or hooks in the running area.
The bottom is blueprinted and slip-coated. The hull is fully
prepped, primed and ready for paint. We also have our own paint shop that
can apply the paint colours of your choice.

Chrome molly cage and seat mounts built and fitted as an
integral part of the boat strength and rigidity.
A state of the art steering system that was developed to eliminate the
problems with loosened steering after a minor bump to the side of the hull,
and gives a more positive steering feel is manufactured in house and fitted
to the individual boat to suit the driver.
The photos you see above are of Scott Ackerman's new hull
that will premiere at Webb's Slough in June with a yet to be spec'd motor

Psycho Racing works with local Fire
Department on rescue techniques
By Todd Gary
Photos by Todd Gary
ALBANY, Oregon (September 5, 2009) — Being in the
fire
service for the last 20+ years and watching our boats all going faster and
faster. I think about things like how would we would get someone out of a
boat if they had a neck or back injury and not make it worse? Is there
anyone that has practiced this? Our USSBA safety crew does an amazing job,
but what does our local fire department know about our sport? So we started
looking at how other organization perform
extrications; specifically open wheel racers because the driver’s area is
similar to our boats.
We then talked with Chief Smith about conducting drill at there fire
station. So, on September 3, 2009 we went to the Halsey Shedd Fire District
and presented what we have learned. We spent about an hour in the class room
giving a PowerPoint presentation on boat
safety,
fuel, roll bars, lack of room, possible injuries, helmet removal and the
Kendal Extrication Device (KED). Then we went out to put what we learned to
use.
With Theresa Gibb tightly strapped in the #151 boat the
firefighters set out to properly extricate her from the boat as if she had
suffered a severe back injury. One of the first things they discovered is
how small the boats
are,
how close the roll bar is and how different the seats are from regular car.
The team worked together and successfully removed Theresa from the boat.
Theresa said “I feel good knowing this Fire Department has practiced this
and did such a great job on there first try.”

Next year before the Albany races we will go back and practice another drill
to keep this unique and challenging extrication problem fresh in all our
minds. Hopefully we will never have to use the safety crews for a serious
injury but if we do rest assured they will do the best job possible in
taking care of our racers.

Dean'O is back in
town!
Teams up
with Butch Madson to put together the Team to Beat - What class??!?
By Jim DeFord
LEWISTON, Idaho (March 20, 2009) — Affectionately
known over the years as Dean "The Machine" Lautenschlager, Dean and Butch
are teaming up to create a USSBA Racing Series team, that will undoubtedly
be at the top of the class every weekend.
But, what class?
Dean is a longtime, world renowned champion in the A-400
class, winning multiple championships in the USSBA Racing Series.
He also made multiple appearances several seasons in New
Zealand and Australia, where the sport of Jet Sprint racing began. Several
drivers from the USSBA have gone down under to race. Few have won
races there. Dean is one of those few.
Dean last appeared in the USSBA Racing Series in 2005, when
he raced for Mike and Melissa Blimka in the Super
Boat class. He finished
that year second to 2005 Super Boat Champion, Tom Nelson. He was within
hundredths of a second of Tom in the last round of the finals at the
National Finals that year. That was a great thing to watch.
The Group A-400 class has been the most competitive class in
the sport for a couple of years now. Will Dean want to "mix it up" and be
the spoiler for Kyle, Doug and Jack, Paul and Gary?
Or, will Dean head directly to Methonal country.

Either way, the 2009 season is shaping up to be the best ever
in the history of the USSBA.
You can stay tuned by visiting the USSBA website for the
latest and greatest news and updates. The USSBA TV Channel runs 24/7 with

PHOENIX, Arizona (March 13, 2009) — By special
invitation from the Unlimited Light Hydroplane Association (ULHRA) the
United States Sprint Boat Association (USSBA) will be making a several
special appearances over the long weekend racing event at Firebird Raceway.
Technically in Chandler, Arizona, Firebird Raceway is hosting
a three-day racing event featuring everything from Monster Trucks, to drag
boats, K boats and of course, the Hydros. The USSBA Sprint Boats will appear
as an exhibition event(s) along with the other boating events.
This is the result of years of efforts to get our boats in
front of these fans. Ron Fisher setup the USSBA for a couple of years at the
Tastin' and Racin' event in Seattle, setting the seed that would soon
grow. The ULHRA loves our sport and many of the teams follow our events.
Through the efforts of the entire Wicked Racing Team, the
USSBA BOD and Officers, this huge opportunity to present our sport as never
seen before is now a reality.
Many thousands of fans will be at this event over the three
day period.
Representing our sport will be:

Dodge Viper
V-10 power plant to make world debut
By Jim DeFord
ALBANY, Oregon (March 11, 2009) — A V-10 engine will
make its debut run in the USSBA this year. Pat Hampl, of the Psycho Racing
Team will move up to the Superboat class in 2009 and run a first time
10-cylinder engine in the history of our sport!
While that 10-cylinder horsepower is impressive, the weight
of the engine could be an issue. The Dodge Viper is impressive on the
asphalt. Can it be as impressive in the water?
At 600+ horsepower and 560 ft lbs of torque off the shelf,
it's an impressive package. Add a race engine engineer to tweak things a bit
and who knows what will happen!
Venom 911, will make its debut in a test session soon. You

You'll now notice a live screen to the left that we run on
the USSBA website. Every time you logon to the site, it's logged as another

Thousands view Wicked
boats at Tacoma Dome
USSBA huge
hit at Monster Jam Pit Party
TACOMA, Washington (January 18, 2009) — Through
months
of negotiations and planning, Dan Morrison's work paid off. The #10 and #01
Lucas Oil, Bell Helmet, K&N Wicked Racing boats were displayed before an
estimated 6,500 Monster Truck fans.
The boats were located right at the fr ont
doors so the stream of fans was continuous for the 3.5 hour Pit Party that
they hold so fans can walk the stadium floor seeing their favorite trucks
and drivers up close.
There were videos playing and between Dan, Doug and Hannah,
over 700 autographed
photos
were passed out to the kids and adults! At times the fans were so thick you
could hardly see the boats.
We also noticed there were many people that came by more than
once. There was one little boy who could not get enough of watching the
video (see photo) and dragged his father back a t
least six times! Dad just gave up and let him watch the video. Paul White
also had a handful of DVDs for those fans who could not get enough!
Tim, Paul Gahr, Don, Dillon, Mike, Kelli, myself, Paul White,
Mary and others chatted with the fans answering tech questions and handing
out 2009 schedules
while autographs were being signed. Everyone we talked to was enthralled.
Many had heard of our type of racing, and were happy to find out we race in
everyone's backyard in the Northwest!
