Show and Shine in East Wenatchee
Well over 100 tickets sold in less than two hours!
By Jim DeFord
EAST WENATCHEE, Washington
(September 3, 2010) — Arrived today about 2pm and drove out to the
track. Wow! It's a beautiful thing to behold. I've seen the pictures, but
it's so much more impressive in person.
And one person who definitely deserves mentioning here is
Dawn Collings. She has worked very hard since about January to make this
happen. Yes, there are many other people who have also gone beyond the call
of duty to create this track and this race against heavy odds, and we all
thank you too. It's great to see this happening and many in the community
are embracing the inaugural race at Thunder Swamp tomorrow.
KCSY-FM was onsite broadcasting live from the Show and Shine
this evening at the mall in front of Macy's interviewing drivers and
navigators. Many fans showed up to purchase their tickets and meet the
teams. And some even got to sit in a boat!
KCSY-FM will also be broadcasting live tomorrow from the
track.
If you cannot make it to the race we will be live-streaming
the race on Ustream. See above for links.
Here are a few photos from the Show and Shine. See you all at
the track tomorrow morning!

Teams prepare to battle in The Swamp
East Wenatchee hosts first race
By Jim DeFord
EAST WENATCHEE, Washington
(September 2, 2010) — The inaugural race at the new track in East
Wenatchee, Thunder
Swamp, is pivotal as the teams head down the wire to the season
ending, championship event at The National finals in Albany in two weeks.
Leaving Thunder Swamp with a substantial lead will be a huge advantage.
All three classes are up for grabs and it will be the most
aggressive and fine-tuned racers that will come out on top of the podium at
the end of the day on Saturday, September 4th. They will all begin on a
level playing field. Not one team has ever had their boat wet on this track.
No practice time. No play time. The track is closed until Saturday morning.
Thunder Swamp is a twisty pretzel, patterned after tracks
found in New Zealand, the home of Sprint Boat Racing, or Jet Sprinting as
they call it. There are no straightaways. It should be a fun track to master
and an exciting day of racing for the fans at the track and watching on the
USSBA's live Ustream channel.
For complete details on Friday's Show and Shine, camping,
directions and more, go to the
Thunder Swamp Website.

East Wenatchee has water!

EAST WENATCHEE, Washington
(August 30, 2010) — While we were racing at Webb's Slough Prazer
Excavation was busy putting the finishing touches on the new track, coined
Thunder Swamp, and filling it with water.
The track is looking beautiful and a standing ovation to all
the people at Prazer for making this possible. They have been working seven
days a week, from 5am until 8pm, to make the race this weekend possible.

The King of The Slough is back!
Jack Bright Sr. cleared to race at Webb's Slough -
Determined to stir up Group A-400 championship
By Jim DeFord
ONTARIO, O regon
(August 23, 2010) — In a telephone interview this afternoon, Jack Bright
Sr. announced that he was cleared medically to race this weekend
at Webb's Slough. Jack Jr. will also be back navigating Rock Chucker as this
classic USSBA racing team once again takes to the track. Dale Barger and his navigator
will be double-teaming the boat with Jack and Jack Jr.
For those of you who are wondering, Jack had major surgery
five weeks ago to remove a cancerous tumor in his abdomen. His recovery has
been remarkable!
"I know I'm out of the points," Jack said, "but I can sure
stir up the pot. We had the pump totally overhauled and with myself
finishing first, and Dale finishing second this weekend, that will just leave a few
crumbs for the others to feed off of." Technically, Jack is not out of the
points for the Group A-400 championship, but it is tough to make up points
missing just one race in this series.
Several others in the class have also performed serious pump
overhauls so it may not be so easy for Jack to claim this weekend's top
spot. However, there are a few more kinks in the 400-class.
Hanna Macke will not be able to navigate at Webb's Slough or
the inaugural race at the brand new Thunder Swamp track being built in East
Wenatchee, Washington. Cara McGuire, Dan Morrison's regular navigator, will
be double-teaming for the Wicked Racing boats the next two races at least.
These are the first races Hannah has missed in eleven years and she's none
to happy about it.
But, Jack Bright, known for his matter-of-factness, is
confident he can pull off a comeback win. "My pump builder said he was
shocked I was running as fast as I was with the pump in the horrible
condition it was in. I will be much faster."
Determined to stir the championship pot, Jack said that he
will be fast enough to make Doug (Hendrickson) nervous enough to make
mistakes and make a run for the top spot on the podium this weekend.
Hendrickson is making a run for his third 400-class
championship in five years and is 90 points ahead of second place, Paul Gahr
Jr. Doug's boat has been incredibly fast this season and his driving more
precise than ever. Though teaming up with a new navigator will be a
challenge, Doug is confident that they can team up nicely.
No matter what happens, it will be a joy to see Jack Bright
Sr. at the track again this weekend. We didn't expect to see him racing
until East Wenatchee, so this is an unexpected surprise for us all!
The weather this weekend will be Pacific Northwest Perfect!
Mid-70's and beautiful sunshine on the Palouse's golden hills of wheat as
the focus of the entire area reigns down on this beautifully maintained
facility in St. John, Washington.
There are points battles in the Super-Modified class and
Super Boat class that will be watched very closely this weekend. Check the
standings for your favorite team to root for!
See you at the track!

Port Angeles track inches closer to reality!
Environmental hurdle #1 cleared
By Jim DeFord
PORT ANGELES, Washington (July 30, 2010) — In
what was becoming a ridiculous exercise in futility with seemingly no end,
Dan Morrison, landowner and Sprint Boat track developer, finally is seeing
the light of a very, very long and expensive tunnel.
The Peninsula Daily News reported in an undated story:
After a year of working with the Army Corps of Engineers, and more than
$40,000 in studies, the investors hoping to create a sprint boat racing
course have been given the go-ahead to go forward with applying for a city
permit to build the course.
This does not mean that a race will happen anytime soon. This
only means that The Dan Morrison Group, official owners of the land, can
apply for a permit. The permit process will have its own hurdles and hoops
to jump through.
If and when a permit is issued then construction of the track
can begin and then possibly racing as early as summer 2011.

co-owner of the Time Bandit crab fishing vessel, and star of the wildly
popular Deadliest Catch TV show tries on Dan Morrison's Super Boat for size.

Jonathan said he, "really wants to get a ride in one of these
boats," and was impressed with the videos they were showing. His schedule
keeps him busy and he might be able to make a race until 2011, but will at

15 minutes of fame
Get yours at Webb's Slough this weekend!
By Jim DeFord
ST. JOHN, Washington (August 24, 2010) — It is said
that we all have a collective 15 minutes of fame during our lives. Even us
not-so-famous regular people. A blurb on a radio show. A brief appearance on
TV. I have had several of my own and I am sure you have also.
This weekend we all have the possibility of adding some more
time to that 15-minutes as there will be camera crews at the race filming
for a broadcast on SPEED channel at a date TBA.
The film crew from Lucas Oil's On The Edge will
be at the race this weekend.
The
On The Edge website says this about the show: Go deep
inside to the true grassroots struggles for racing superiority. Figure 8
races, wheelie stand competitions, rock climbers and SPEED truck racing.
It’s action-packed racing on the very fringes of motor sports. It’s all
about the passion for the sport and the glory of taking your automobile past
its limits.
Well, it looks like we're adding boats to that repertoire! The USSBA has had
a few brief appearances on TV over the years, but unfortunately not usually
shown in a very good form. The best ever TV coverage for the USSBA was
All Jacked Up filmed at Albany last year.
On The Edge is a show that will let
our sport shine for itself and tell it like it is and not rely on
over-dramatic crashes to get the point across.
We look forward to seeing the show!

Field of Dreams being readied for July 24th event
Extra safety measures added as team preps track
By Jim DeFord
TANGENT, Oregon (June 26, 2010) — Oregon JetSprint,
the organizing body of this incredible track just south of Albany, will be
adding more cabling and catch fencing as they prepare for their first event
of the 2010 USSBA Racing Series season.
There is a huge contingent behind every track as they prepare
for each race and with the Albany track being the largest by far, of any
track on the circuit, it's even more work for these folks who also race in
the USSBA Racing Series.
So, in addition to preparing boats and teams and traveling
and on and on, Oregon JetSprint also maintains the Field of Dreams. Quite a
monumental task with the majority of the team also holding day jobs on top
of all that.
The racing this season has been nothing less than uber-exciting
with the fastest boats we have seen in ALL classes in many years.
That speed will be amplified several times over at this great
facility. Track co-owner, Kyle Patrick informed me the other day that we
will also be shooting photos from a helicopter for part of the race in four
weeks.
We shot from a helicopter for the first event at Webb's
Slough and DeFord Photo is very excited to be able to offer that perspective
at the Field of Dreams during the July race, in addition to on-track shots
and other photographs from around the track.
A special thanks to Oregon JetSprint for providing those
facilities for the USSBA media photo and video crews.

East Wenatchee council cancels July 3rd race
By Jim DeFord
EAST WENATCHEE, Washington (May 2, 2010) — After much
deliberation, citizen input, hand wringing and gnashing of the teeth, the
East Wenatchee city council has voted to cancel the proposed July 3rd race.
And with this change the whole scenario needs to be revisited as now with
just the proposed September race looming.
In others words, it's once again back to step one, with the
odds being the September race also being canceled and two races (once again)
being considered for 2011.
From Wenatchee World: Another proposed race scheduled for
Sept. 4 is now on hold until the city council can vote to approve it. At
Tuesday’s council meeting, Lacy said he expects a new proposal and vote at
the next City Council meeting, on May 11. The vote is necessary because the
scope of the races have changed — from two races to one race this year —
thus the costs and revenues also are different, he said.
From reading the above quoted article from
Wenatchee World, it looks as though the major roadblock was
in the acquisition of water. With those roadblocks in place, though not
insurmountable, it was decided to cancel the July race due to the tight
timeframe of getting everything properly organized and permitted by the
proposed July 3rd race date.

Sprint boat racing churns into East Wenatchee
By
Rochelle Feil Adamowsky
World staff writer
The Wenatchee World
East Wenatchee, Washington (February 25, 2010) —
Sprint boat racing is on its way to East Wenatchee this summer.
The East Wenatchee City Council approved sponsoring the event with a 4-2
vote Tuesday night.
The city is considering two proposed dates for races, July 3 and Sept. 4.
Dawn Collings, the city’s events board director, said she has received
positive feedback from people and businesses in the Wenatchee Valley. “I
think we’ve addressed the major issues. I think we’re in a good position to
bring this event to the community.”
The proposed location for the races is east of Union Avenue on 10th Street
N.E. In preparation for the race, a course would be dug and filled with
water. Collings said irrigation water is available through the Greater
Wenatchee Irrigation District. Fencing and gravel also would be added.
Collings presented the City Council with estimated expenses and revenues of
the proposed races. The first race is estimated to cost $40,000 — which will
cover trenching, leasing property, a county event permit, United States
Sprint Boat Association fees and other expenses. Revenues for fees and
passes are conservatively expected to be about $43,500. The city also
estimates that about $55,000 will come in to the city through hotel rooms,
food and fuel for visitors. Subsequent races are estimated to cost about
$25,000. Money to fund the races will come from undesignated sales tax
revenue.
“Those are probably not accurate numbers; they’re just as close as you can
get, as accurate as you can get,” said Mayor Steve Lacy during the meeting.
Collings estimated revenues and expenses based on information received from
area businesses, the Sprint Boat Association and the Wenatchee Valley
Convention & Visitor’s Bureau.
“The city’s risk here would be approximately $10,000 to $15,000, maybe
$20,000,” Lacy said. “First of all, that’s not going to break the bank. It’s
not going to raise taxes, and it’s probably not going to happen. ... The
risk is not that significant, but the benefit to the community is
significant.”
Lacy noted that the first year the city held the Wings & Wheels Festival,
fewer details were known about revenues and expenses of the festival than
are known now about the sprint boat races. That year, 2002, about $4,000 was
lost. Now, the city makes about $8,000 on the event.
Before he voted no, Councilman Dennis Hendricks expressed concerns about not
having enough facts. “I’m not about to be a risk taker with other people’s
money,” he said. Councilman Dave Bremmer also voted no.

It's the navigators
Integral team member sometimes forgotten
By Jim DeFord
ALBANY, Oregon (September 21, 2010) — In the Albany
race recap I purposely left our mentioning the navigators. Well, except for
Teri seeing only grass. Wow!
The purpose was not to ignore them, but to highlight them in
a separate article dedicated to the Sprint Boat Navigator.
Having ridden in several boats in the exact seat they occupy
does give me a first-hand view of what they see.
Inside the boat, running blinding speeds and teeth-clenching
g-forces, gives a person a whole new outlook to what the navigator sees and
does. I immediately and firmly acquired a whole new respect for the
navigators after "walking in their shoes."
Most of the navigators do truly navigate and direct the
driver to and through the proper channels and turns. But, some do not and
the drive does their own navigation. It is required for someone to fill the
#2 seat. They are not required to navigate.
Some navigators watch the gauges and are on the ready in case
oil pressure or other gauges indicate an impending engine failure. In that
case, the navigator signals the driver that the engine needs to be shut
down.
The navigators and driver receive the course layout, or
"rotation" as it is referred to, the night before the race. That gives them
less than 12 hours to memorize the course.
In the mornings, they walk the course and review the rotation
and then prepare to go racing.
Also note that many of the navigators are team members also
that help in maintaining the boat. On several of the teams. the driver and
navigator ARE the crew!
I would list names, but do not have the space, or the time,
and forgetting one person would be a tragedy so I will not list names.
If you have followed the sport for any length of time, you
know it's a family sport and many of the navigators are brothers, or
fathers, or sons or daughters, or even mothers and sometimes just longtime
friends.
But, the navigator's dedication and commitment are just as
strong as the drivers. They are there when the boat flips and rolls. They
are there when the boat flips upside down in the water and they are there
when the checkered flag flies and has the privilege of waving that flag of
victory at the end of the day.
So, a big thanks to all the navigators for keeping these
drivers pointed in the right direction...Most of the time.

VA Day at Field of Dreams
Vets honored on very busy weekend
By Jim DeFord
ALBANY, Oregon (September 26, 2010) — Between two
local college football games and the USSBA National Finals it was a busy day
for a handful of Vets from the Portland facility.
Eric Werner, an active Navy pilot started the ball rolling
with a call to Mike Macaleer, the VA Public Affairs Officer to see about
setting up a visit at the hospital and having a few Vets attend a race.
The project was handed over to Shaun Benson, Director of
Volunteer Services.
A hospital visit was setup for Friday, September 17th from
11am-1pm, but due to the extreme interest and enthusiasm the visit was
extended until 2pm!
The USSBA was represented by the Jolly Rogers and Wicked race
teams with Eric and his sister Fawn, Tammi Hopson, Judy Allen and Doug
Hendrickson, Hannah Macke, Dan Morrison and Shauna Hayles.
The boats were parked right outside so the patients could
look out the windows to see them. Eric, Doug, Dan and Hannah went room to
room visiting the Vets and handing out autographed photos. They visited more
than 20 rooms with 4 Vets in each room.
On race day, due to the inclement weather and previous
obligations to both the Ducks and Beavers home games also being played on
the same day, we had four Vets able to come to the event.
Shaun Benson donated a flag that he carried in his ruck sack
on missions in Afghanistan in 2004. That flag was the one that was raised
and flew over the track during the race and will remain with Oregon Jet
Sprint. Oregon Jet Sprint also comped the tickets and provided box lunches
for the vets.
Shaun also handed out very special, traditional "Welcome
Home" coins that are given to each Vet when they arrive back home, to the
race winners.
Jolly Rogers Racing raised over $600 which provided for gift
certificates for DVDs, drinks, food, and memorabilia. Only half of that
money was spent and we will use the rest next year when we will hopefully
have more veterans attend.
All four veterans were absolutely blown away by our sport and
the reception from the race teams. They were extremely grateful for the
gesture the USSBA made and look forward to future events.
The USSBA is also working with the Portland VA to do similar
events in St John with the Spokane VA, Marsing with the Boise VA, if a race
is held there in 2011, along with Wenatchee and Port Angeles with the
Seattle VA for the 2011 season.
Several other of the race teams expressed enthusiasm to
participate in this program for 2011.

It's Race Day!
Excitement abounds as racers and fans prepare for the
day's events
By Jim DeFord
ST. JOHN, Washington (August 28, 2010) — In just a
very short three years the USSBA sprint boat track in St. John, Washington,
Webb's Slough, has quickly become the sport's biggest event.
Big crowds, a large purse for the racers to compete for, the
coolest looking trophies on the circuit, the best food and a sea of
motorhomes that start gathering days before the event even begins.
With our our live broadcasting, we are also able to present
the sport to the entire world. Last year at the August event we had over
40,000 viewers on our Ustream channel!
Back in the the heyday of the Indianapolis 500, it was a
run-what-ya-brung event. One-off racers that invested everything for one
event, because of the notoriety and world exposure. teams that could not get
sponsorship during the regular racing season could secure great sponsorship
packages for this one race.
The world focused on this one track, on this day and the
excitement was electric.
That is what Webb's Slough has become in our sport: Our
Indianapolis 500.
Yesterday at the show and shine on main street in downtown
St. John, there were so many people it was hard to navigate the sidewalks!
Never in the years I have been covering the USSBA have I seen a crowd
anything close to the throng of fans at a pre-race day show and shine.
Today is also special because we have the Lucas Oil video
team to record our race to put together and One The Edge show to be
broadcast sometime this fall.
Good luck to all the racers. Let's have an exciting and safe
day of racing!

County approves permit for September event in East
Wenatchee
With a few caveats
EAST WENATCHEE, Washington (July 22, 2010) — Wenatchee
World reports that the event permit needed to move the September event
has been approved and issued. This means that work can finally begin on
digging the track for the planned September 4th event.
There are several conditions to the permit which do not look,
at this point, to be a show stopper. The permit does not apply to the July
2011 event.

Potential wrench thrown into spokes of East Wenatchee
event
Fire access becomes an issue
By Jim DeFord
EAST WENATCHEE, Washington (July 16, 2010) — As
reported in Wenatchee World, the local newspaper for the Wenatchee
area, fire access has become the latest roadblock thrown at two proposed
events in September 2010 and July 2011. The article was published July 14,
2010.
As the event organizers try and get their ducks in a row for
the required event permit, the county chief is asking for a second access
road to the track, even though there will be a fire truck present at the
track on race day.
It's looking to be an issue of whether the secondary access
road requires gravel or not.

It's time to go racing
Thunder River Racing Revives Marsing
By Jim DeFord
MARSING, Idaho (May 13, 2010) —
Just
three weeks and a couple days the United States Sprint Boat Association
Racing Series will head into Marsing, Idaho with engines at full song and
ready to rock and roll as the series begins the 2010 (aka twenty-ten)
season.
After a one year split, not unlike that of IndyCar and the
Indy Racing League in the 1990's that took nearly 15 years to resolve, at
least some of the fledgling National Jet Sprint Association (NJSA) teams
will be joining the major sanctioning body of sprint boat racing in the
United States, the USSBA, for the 2010 season starter race in Marsing,
Idaho.
An entirely new management team will be heading up the two
Marsing events scheduled for June 5th and August 7th. The track has been
groomed like not seen since the tracks inception in the 1990's as the first
dug track in the United States.
Longtime USSBA proponent, sprint boat racer and 2009
defending Group A-400 Champion, Jack Bright Sr., is managing the Marsing
track for the 2010 season and the outlook is excellent for 2010 and beyond.
Jack and his team, Thunder River Racing (TRR) have groomed
the entire bottom of the track, cleaning out the shoals that have grown and
grown over the years as a sprint boat track deteriorates race to race. TRR
is also raking back the blown-out gravel over the banks to make Marsing a
truly reformed track like the the teams have not seen for many years.
Marsing has been completely renewed and the USSBA is proud to
hold its first race of the twenty-ten (2010) season at this scenic Snake
River-hugging track. Both the teams and the fans will be privy to the best
sprint boat racing this track has seen since the 1990's.
Marsing is back...She's mad as hell...and she's not
going to take it anymore!
Come and see, and fall in love once again, the sprint boat
racing you knew and love...
The boys are back in town!

(May 19, 2010) —
John Jones, the builder of the very first USA-born sprint boat, and a
pioneer of sprint boat racing in the United States passed away on May 9,
2010, after a battle with cancer.
John, Jim Grothie, Golden Wardel and a few others were the
original sprint boat racers in the United States and what has now become the
United States Sprint Boat Racing Association and the USSBA Racing Series
that takes place in the Northwestern corner of the United States.
There will be a moment of silence at the opening ceremonies
of the 2010 USSBA Racing Series at Marsing Idaho, on Saturday, June 5th.

Marsing officially on 2010 schedule
By Jim DeFord
MARSING, Idaho (February 11, 2010) — After an abrupt
and
tumultuous disappearance in 2008, the Marsing track is back on the schedule
for the 2010 season.
Thanks to Jack Bright, who will mastermind the two races at
Marsing this year, the 2010 schedule is expanding rapidly with the addition
of Marsing. If you notice the schedule posted here on the website, there are
two TBA races that will also be announced shortly. Stay tuned...
But, in the meantime, the contracts are signed for the Idaho
track and the track will be preened and ready for the opening round of the
USSBA Sprint Boat Racing Series on June 5th. The second race at Marsing will
be held August 7th.
Along with the addition of the Marsing track—the first dug
track in the United States—will come the teams and boats from Idaho that ran
a short-lived series in 2008/09.
Though I didn't have the exact numbers, teams or names at
press time, this could expand our boat count well above 30 boats with the
new teams we had coming online before this announcement.
So, ladies and gentlemen, start your engines and get ready to
battle the rocky shoals of the tight Marsing track! See you in June!

Champions receive trophies - Tentative
2010 schedule announced
By Jim DeFord
PENDLETON, Oregon (October 25, 2009) — The 2009 USSBA
Racing Series champions have been officially crowned. Amanda Webb created
beautiful one-of-a-kind trophies for the teams to place in their trophy
cases. The dinner at the Pendleton Red Lion was absolutely delicious.
Results of the 2009 Motel Furniture Racing Association (MFRA)
luggage cart and chair races are under review. Protests have been filed and
fines may be issued. Injuries were minor and all furniture was returned
mostly intact.
The tentative 2010 schedule has been posted. Dan Morrison
announced that there is a pivotal meeting on or about November 3 that could
decide the fate of the proposed Port Angeles track.
The Army Corp of Engineers has presented some interesting
hurdles—like any government agency can—and everyone has their fingers
crossed that these issues will be resolved at that meeting
Revival of the track in Marsing, Idaho was also discussed as
there apparently are no races scheduled to run there by the NJSA in 2010.
There are quite a few hurdles to be resolved there before a race in Marsing
could be sanctioned by the USSBA.
Stay tuned to the USSBA website for further information on
both tracks. You will notice several open dates that could be filled by
races at both Port Angeles and Marsing.
Links for the photos from the weekend will be provided on the
forum.
